About Us

Colfax Elementary School District has been serving families and students in Colfax and surrounding communities since 1853.

Our school is like a family. Colfax Elementary is a a one school district located in the foothills below the Tahoe National Forest. We serve approximately 380 preschool through 8th graders and have about two classes per grade level. We are small enough that we know each other’s names but big enough to have excellent educational and enrichment opportunities for our students.  Parents tell us they choose our school especially because of our caring staff and feeling of community. One parent said, “A wonderful small town school with family feel and wonderful people. You couldn’t be so lucky to have your child be a part of this community.”   In addition to teaching core academics, we offer amazing arts and enrichment opportunities such as visual art taught by a credentialed teacher, drama, robotics, track, basketball, soccer, music appreciation, Spanish, and gardening.  Our P.E. program is also taught by a credentialed Physical Education teacher where students learn everything from coordination, catching and throwing a ball to Basketball and Pickleball! Students in upper grades have an opportunity to attend courses at the high school next door.

We received a $20,000 grant entirely for student enrichment for our Discovery Club and were able to continue these programs with school funds and support from our active Parent Teacher Association.  Our PTA raised over $38,000 in 2019 and has a $50,00 goal for 2020. Such support provides our families and students experiences beyond the classroom. We have an annual Fall Festival with music, games, food and fun and a Spring Fling Family Dance each year. Our students are also able to go on field trips.   You might find our primary students learning at local farms, the state capitol, a fish hatchery or our 6th graders in the Santa Cruz mountains for their annual Science Camp; a week of a lifetime for these students.

There is so much to share about our amazing school. We hope you will come visit us if you want to know more. Please don’t hesitate to call our welcoming office staff at 530-346-2202 for a tour of our beautiful campus and a glimpse of our day.
